Understanding Apostille in Hong Kong: Simplifying Document Authentication

ApostilleApostille, often called the “Hague apostille,” is a certification that validates the origin of public documents like birth or marriage certificates. Hong Kong, a member of the Hague Convention since 1965, simplifies the document authentication process. This certification confirms the authenticity of signatures and the authority of officials who sign public documents.

Documents issued in Hong Kong, certified with an apostille under the 1961 Hague Convention, are recognised in over 120 member states, eliminating the need for additional certifications. Designated competent authorities in Hong Kong, including the Administrative Secretary and Registrar of the High Court, facilitate the apostille process for a standard fee of 125 HKD.

Notarised documents, extracts from the trade register, and documents certified by a notary public are eligible for apostille. Consular legalisation applies to documents not recognised under the Hague Convention. Whether in-person or overseas, the process involves document submission, fee payment, and authentication, ensuring international recognition of Hong Kong public documents.
