Hong Kong Announces Corporate Intern Scheme to Help Youths
Many youths have ideals about working for a corporate organisation. And with the corporate intern scheme announced, Hong Kong youths can now have placements in Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas.
Through summer internships, Hong Kong youths can gain the necessary exposure and experience to broaden their horizons. Being technologically savvy and forward-thinking, the youth and corporate organisations will benefit from each other’s perceptions.
Corporate Intern Scheme
The Hong Kong government recently announced that the Corporate Summer Internship will have more than 320 placements for the young people of Hong Kong. The government will collaborate with all facets of the community to promote a range of initiatives designed to open young people’s minds and give them a better understanding of how the nation and the rest of the world are developing.
Once the corporate intern scheme was announced, up to 24 participating companies offered more than 320 internship placements available in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chengdu, Chongqing, and various cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, compared to only 18 companies in the past.
Additionally, overseas locations like Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, the UK, and Sweden are included in the internship placements.
The placements now cover a more comprehensive range of industries than in the past, including financial services, innovation and technology, logistics, real estate development, retail, hospitality, and public utilities.
The applicants must be post-secondary students enrolled in sub-degree, undergraduate, or postgraduate programmes who are permanent residents of Hong Kong. The internship will begin from June to September 2023, lasting at least six weeks.
Benefits For The Youth
With the corporate intern scheme announced, the young people of Hong Kong now have an opportunity to be part of the corporate world, albeit for a short period. They now can have first-hand experience with how corporations in China and the rest of the world operate.
Among the benefits for the youth are:
- Gain work experience in a variety of industries
- Develop professional skills and knowledge
- Broaden horizons
- Improve employment prospects
As some youth may face financial constraints to avail themselves of the internships, participating businesses will pay the interns for crucial expenses, such as travel and lodging. Companies are also committed to assigning a buddy to train and assist the interns.
The government will also organise various events to enhance the interns’ exposure and educational opportunities.
